Poland, once one of Europe’s most conservative and religious countries, has elected a transsexual MP.The BBC reports that 57-year-old Anna Grodzka, previously a man before an operation in Thailand, was sworn in today.
The move may surprise people who have followed Polish politics for a while, but it Grodzka’s election comes as part of a surge in popularity for reformist party the Palikot Movement, which aims to push back against the traditional influence of the Catholic church in Polish life.
Grodzka is the first transsexual elected to Polish parliament. Her arrival comes just a month after Poland elected its first gay MP, Robert Biedron.
