Many people are standing and applauding the post-game comments made by Chiefs offensive lineman Eric Winston who blasted fans for cheering when quarterback Matt Cassell was knocked out during Sunday’s game. However, there was one comment that could end up being used by the NFL against former players that are currently suing the league over concussion-related injuries. The comment, which is absent from many of the transcribed versions of Winston’s rant, comes towards the end of his speech…
“This is a game that is going to cost us a lot down the road. That’s OK. We picked it. We deserve it. I don’t want your pity.”
Currently, there are more than 2,000 former players suing the NFL for concealing the long-term damage that can be caused by head injuries, while at the same time glorifying the violence of the sport. Former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon recently told ABC News that the reason for the lawsuit is because “[The players] didn’t know about the head trauma and they [the NFL] did.”
However, the NFL is likely to counter with quotes such as the one by Winston, in showing that the players knew the risks involved and accepted them just part of the price they must pay to play the game.
So while many players are likely applauding Winston for sticking up for a teammate, others may have cringed and could be worried that he went too far.
