After months of sultry campaigning, NBC is ready to concede its bunnies: the network just canceled “The Playboy Club.”
It also gave full season orders to “Up All Night” (starring Will Arnett and Christina Applegate) and “Whitney” (starring Whitney Cummings).
All this activity has Hank Azaria, star of the network’s “Free Agents,” feeling jumpy. He’s tweeting desperately on behalf of the show (see below), which is presumably on the chopping block.
“Agents,” for what it’s worth, isn’t a zero-to-60 hit. The longterm storylines feel boxed-in — with a show founded on will-they-or-won’t-they, where is there to go?
And while Azaria and Kathryn Hahn are perfectly likable, the supporting characters are pretty brutal, through no fault of the actors. We could barely sit through last week’s Natasha Leggero plot.
But it almost goes without saying at this point that it’s better than “Whitney,” the survival of which baffles us.
