I just returned from a family vacation to Orlando. By the way, I’m not sure if you can call it a “vacation” when you take a 5 year old to Disney. We were up at dawn and thoroughly covered 3 parks in 3 days. Don’t get me wrong, I loved spending time with my wife and daughter, but it was a long and tiring journey.
I clearly remember the day before we left for home. We were travelling to our last park – Disney’s Magic Kingdom. I was excited as it offered the largest amount of action rides. We moved at a rapid pace through Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square. We grabbed a few snacks here and there, but our main goal was to get through as much as we could! After over 10 hours of unmitigated progress, my daughter was……well…..pooped. It was time to go back to the hotel. We flagged a cab and went back to our lovely resort at Animal Kingdom Lodge (a great place to stay for any Disney traveller). By the time we reached the room, our daughter was completely out. We were all tired, but as our daughter slept, my wife and I realised we had an insatiable appetite. After all, we didn’t eat anything of substance all day. The problem is that we couldn’t go out to dinner since our daughter was sleeping. Instead, I ran downstairs and picked up the one item that I could grab the quickest – a pizza. It by no means was a large pizza. I would say it was somewhere between a personal pan pizza and a medium pizza. Regardless, it was something to eat.
As you can imagine, my wife and I began chowing down on the pizza. The problem was that we were both hungry and a 50/50 split of the pizza just wasn’t going to work. As I turned my head, I noticed my wife grabbing a piece of pizza from “my half”. How dare her! She now had 5 slices to my 3!!!! Just as I was about to protest, Sportscenter came back from commercial and lunged into a dialogue about the NBA Lockout. Per Tim Legler, one of the major obstacles to resolving the discord was the disagreement over how owners and players split the “pie”. How ironic! My little protest over the split of pizza was somehow analogous to the NBA lockout. As I thought about this (upon laying down for bed on a fairly empty stomach and sore feet), I was able to draw some additional analogies that really do help explain the current problems in the NBA.
