Brandon Crusan bet $50 at 1000-1 odds that his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates would win their division before the season. Now, with the team in the playoff hunt for the first time in 19 years, he’s looking at a $50,000 payday.
“Overall, I felt that we were in the worst division in baseball; so why not throw 50 on my Buccos?” Crusan told David Payne of Covers.com. “I mean we have to turn it around sometime right?”
The slumping Pirates are currently 5.5 games back of the Brewers in the division.
But their odds of winning the division have still dropped to 10-1.
Vegas bookmakers are also keeping a nervous eye on the team, as Crusan is not the only one to put a small bet on the long-shot Pirates.
“We do have exposure on the Pirates,” Caesar’s consultant Todd Furhman told Covers, “and I’m inclined to believe every book around town will be in a similar predicament if the Buccos get through considering the prices that were out there at one point.”
