Why you should never completely trust the photos on hotel websites

Hotels aren’t always completely honest when it comes to the photos they post on their websites.

Professional reviewers from the hotel review website Oyster visited vacation properties around the world, and the photos they took didn’t quite match up with the online fantasy.

If you’re thinking of booking a warm getaway to escape the bitter winter cold, let these “photo fakeouts” serve as a cautionary tale against relying solely on hotels’ marketing materials.

Some are so egregious, you’ll think you are looking at pictures of two completely different properties.

FANTASY: Guest at the Sandals Carlyle Inn can relax on cozy lounge chairs on a beautiful white sand beach.

REALITY: The beach is actually a tiny patch of sand right off a busy street.

FANTASY: At Maca Bana in Grenada, you can sip cocktails by a gorgeous pool and soak in the incredible views.

REALITY: The tiny pool is more like the size of a bathtub.

FANTASY: The AVA Hotel Athens has an incredible balcony looking right up onto the Acropolis.

REALITY: It's not actually that close.

FANTASY: A smiling instructor will teach you to play tennis at Samsara Cliff Resort & Spa in Jamaica.

REALITY: There's a reason they didn't show the actual tennis court.

FANTASY: A rooftop haven at New York City's Dream Downtown.

REALITY: That's one skinny pool.

FANTASY: Live an urban dream at the Hudson Hotel in New York.

REALITY: An impossibly small living space.

FANTASY: Take a romantic nighttime dip at the Los Angeles Sofitel.

REALITY: You'll be basking in the shadow of a Macy's.

FANTASY: A tranquil infinity pool overlooking the ocean at Sheraton Waikiki in Hawaii doesn't have a single person in it.

REALITY: Still gorgeous -- just extremely crowded.

FANTASY: Up-close colourful shots of smiling guests promise a fun day at the Dunes Manor Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland.

REALITY: The small pool is very bland.

FANTASY: Watch the sun set from the gorgeous ocean-view pool at Tensing Pen in Jamaica.

REALITY: The tight crop hides the fact that the pool is barely a pool at all.

FANTASY: A huge comfortable bed awaits you at the Hotel Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

REALITY: It's actually two twin beds side by side, sharing the same headboard.

FANTASY: The Claridge Hotel in Miami appears to have an Italianate indoor pool.

FANTASY: The Comfort Suites near Williamsburg, Virginia seems to have a spacious gym.

REALITY: The gym is actually a bit claustrophobic.

FANTASY: A swanky setup on the rooftop of the Ritz Carlton Los Angeles.

REALITY: A pretty space, but much more plain in daylight.

FANTASY: Guests at Le Dune Suite hotel in Puglia, Italy can enjoy a delicious breakfast spread by the pool.

REALITY: The pool looks much less appealing when zoomed out.

FANTASY: Stretch out on your balcony at the London West Hollywood.

REALITY: A close-up can be very misleading.

FANTASY: The immaculate beach at Barcelo Capella Beach Resort, Dominican Republic.

REALITY: That beach is covered in seaweed.
