PHOTOS: The Life And Times Of ‘Mad Dog’ Qaddafi

qaddafi

Libyan rebels took control of Tripoli on Sunday, and met little resistance from government forces.

While Qaddafi’s whereabouts remain unknown, the International Criminal Court has confirmed the arrest of Qaddafi’s son and one-time heir apparent Saif al-Islam. His eldest son Mohammad, chairman of Libya’s main state-run telecommunications firm, has also reportedly been detained by rebels.

Qaddafi first seized power from King Idris in a bloodless coup nearly 42 years ago. Since then he has been entirely unpredictable. Often referred to as “the mad dog of the middle east”, he began launching attacks on his own people earlier this year, after Libyan’s began protesting his rule.

We’ve put together images that span Qaddafi’s career. These include his alliance with Arab and African leaders, his quest for weapons of mass destruction and eventual surrender of them; the 1986 bombing of Libya by US forces, his efforts at the turn of the century to win the favour of the Western world, and finally the long, drawn-out collapse of his regime.
