Lionsgate announced this morning Philip Seymour Hoffman will join the cast of “Catching Fire,” the sequel to box-office hit “The Hunger Games.”The Oscar-winning actor’s casting confirms rumours of Hoffman’s attachment to the film after leaving his agency Paradigm of 18 years.
Hoffman will play Plutarch Heavensbee, the new “gamemaker” of the Hunger Games, replacing Seneca Crane who was offed as the last gamemaker in the first film.
The best-selling trilogy from Suzanne Collins has grossed more than $678 million worldwide since opening at the end of March.
Hoffman’s role as gamemaker is one that will become front and centre in the series’ third book, “Mockingjay.”
“Catching Fire,” is set for a November 22, 2013 theatre release.

The actor and filmmaker just wrapped a Broadway run as Willy Loman in the revival of “Death of a Salesman” for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. He will next be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” and the indie film “A Late Quartet” alongside Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken. More recent films include “Moneyball,” “The Ides of March” and “Jack Goes Boating” which marked Hoffman’s feature directorial debut.
