Penn State University raised $208 million in the same fiscal year that a child sex abuse scandal ostensibly damaged the reputation of the school for good, the AP reports. It’s PSU’s second-best fundraising fiscal year ever, only behind FY2010 — when the school raised $274 million thanks to a one-time donation of $88 million for upgrades to the hockey program.
More than 191,000 people gave donations at all. The football booster club in particular enjoyed an increase in fundraising, the AP says.
Rod Kirsch, the senior VP of alumni relations, said he was happy that alumni “rallied to the cause” during “a very difficult time.”
Two Penn State officials currently face perjury charges in relation to an alleged institutional cover-up of Sandusky’s crimes.
