Australian politicians react to Pauline Hanson wearing a burqa in the Australian Senate

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson wore a burqa into the Senate chamber in Canberra today.

Hanson entered the chamber fully covered in the black garment, and removed the headpiece to take the floor for an address in which she called for the banning of burqas in public on grounds of national security.

Attorney-general George Brandis quickly responded on behalf of the government, saying to “ridicule the community and mock its religious garments is an appalling thing to do”.

His response received a standing ovation and extended applause by the sitting members.

Here are some of the reactions from Australian politicians to Hanson’s stunt, including recognition from both and opposition Senators for Brandis and his condemnation of the stunt.
