Path is having a big party this Thursday at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. We know this because a source showed us an invite to the event—and because the Great American Music Hall just put up a sign on its marquee which says “Thurs. Path Path Path.”
We find this hilarious, because Path PR just told us that the team behind the hot mobile social app was “heads down for the next couple of months working on product updates.”
Apparently “heads down” is a reference to how Path’s engineers are going to be banging their heads up and down Thursday night.
And we’re sure they’re going to get a lot of work done Friday.
Path investor Chi-Hua Chien of Kleiner Perkins just blabbed about how “beautiful” Path’s new product was on Twitter. So it’s possible that the company may release some update to its app this week.
Or, more likely, it’s taking advantage of the huge number of mobile developers who are in town this week for Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference to do some recruiting.
You’re going to hear a lot of people saying the existence of this party proves there’s a bubble, or that Path CEO Dave Morin is foolish to throw a rager when everyone’s talking about how the economy’s in crisis. Say what you want about how Path is using investors’ money: If it helps maintain Path’s image among engineers as one of the hottest places to work, it may prove worth it in the long run. It may not. Every startup is a gamble.
Path PR did not respond to an admittedly jokey-but-snide note about how our invite to the party appeared to have gotten lost in the tubes.
