A few hours after Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s camp gave the world hope for a Super Fight against Manny Pacquiao, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum scoffed at the possibility on ESPN.com.”The way [the Mayweather people] are going about it seems like a bizarre way to go about it. If you want to put it together, you meet, you talk. You don’t just come out and say, ‘The fight is May 5 at the MGM.’ What kind of negotiation is that? So I don’t take what they said seriously,” he said.
Yesterday, Floyd’s people announced that they are staging a fight May 5 at the MGM Grand, and want to face “the little guy.”
Arum was unimpressed.
“I think it’s Floyd’s way of trying to grab a little bit of the spotlight away from Manny. I’m not going to get upset. I take it with a grain of salt.”
Arum is completely and inanely missing the point here.
The world wants this fight to happen. They don’t care about Arum’s egotistical desire to be the one driving the negotiations, and sure don’t care about the nitty-gritty of how the two camps agree to stage this fight.
All Arum had to say was, “Haha maybe,” or “No comment” and the sports world would have kept the Super Fight in its collective consciousness.
Instead, he cut off any excitement for the fight and the sport of boxing at the knees.
Mayweather’s announcement yesterday piqued the public’s interested.
But Arum’s comments afterward showed the public exactly why this fight isn’t happening. There are too many egos, too many promoters and hangers-on pushing their own agendas, and not enough common sense people trying to get the two together for the most lucrative and obvious fight ever.
Here’s the tail-end of his rant:
It’s noise and it probably helps my Pacquiao-Marquez event. I’m happy with it. It’s out there. But it’s a joke. You don’t negotiate this way. The reason I don’t take it seriously is why make an announcement now? Why now? How do you justify it? What’s the hurry? Either they’re just amateurs and not thinking or they thought I would go ballistic.
