Jon Huntsman’s presidential campaign escalated its attacks on Republican front-runner Mitt Romney with a new website devoted to him ducking the press. The site, ScaredMittless2012.com, counts the days since Romney’s last appearance on a Sunday morning talk show (609) and his last press conference (27), and links to articles about his absence from the public eye while on the campaign trail. The website asserts that Romney is “running from America.”
Yesterday a coalition of conservatives launched an anyone-but-Mitt campaign, and the website NotMittRomney.com.
“Mitt Romney’s not running a cautious campaign; he’s running from tough questions. Running from his record of flip-flops and avoiding controversial stands doesn’t amount to presidential leadership,” said Huntsman campaign spokesman Tim Miller in a statement to the press. “Jon Huntsman hasn’t shied away from the tough questions because he stands on conviction, not political convenience. Romney’s strategy begs the question: if you’re too afraid to answer David Gregory’s questions on Sunday morning, how can Republican voters trust you to take on Barack Obama in 2012?”
Huntsman has pledged to place first or second in the New Hampshire primary — a state where Romney currently holds a commanding lead.
