Last night, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly went nuts after his team’s Rose Bowl-clinching fumble recovery. And now we might have a better idea why he was so excited.According to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today, the Ducks’ 12th win of the year triggers a clause in Kelly’s contract that extends it one extra year with a salary of $4 million for the 2015-16 season. That’s a 42.9% increase in pay over his 2011-12 salary ($2.8 million).
Kelly is already one of the 20 highest-paid coaches in college football. Only three coaches* (Bob Stoops, Nick Saban, Mack Brown) made at least $4 million this season
In addition to the extra year on his contract, Kelly has also earned $235,000 this season in bonuses, including $100 thousand for winning the Pac-12, $75,000 for a bowl appearance, and $60,000 for a top-10 finish.
* Lane Kiffin reportedly makes $4 million per year. But as a private school, USC is not obligated to release details of his contract.
