Oprah finally came out today on CBS This Morning to say that she may not have started OWN had she known prior the difficulty of creating a network.”If I knew then what I know now … I might have made some different choices,” Oprah tells the morning show. “If I were writing a book about it, I could call the book ‘101 mistakes.'”
One of the biggest mistakes?
“Launching when we weren’t really ready to launch,” said Oprah. “It’s like having the wedding when you know you’re not ready.”
Oprah shared that she probably would have waited until she finished her daily ABC show to take on the new venture. However, despite the latest setbacks for OWN—the dipping ratings, the 30-person layoff—she’s feeling better about her network now than she ever did.
“Because you failed at something, which we haven’t failed, … doesn’t mean you are a failure,” tells Oprah. “You can use whatever is happening in that moment to say, ‘Maybe I need to move in a new direction.'”
So, what’s OWN’s next move?
“Our strategy is to do what we should have done from the beginning—to build one show, one hour, one night at a time and then move to the next night,” shared Oprah.
