Good morning! Here are the plays everybody will be talking about on Tuesday.
Mets execute perfect relay to nail runner at home. Two of the most exciting plays in baseball are the inside-the-park home run and throwing out a runner at home. So it is only logical that an even more exciting play is when a runner is thrown out at home trying to go for an inside-the-park home run. Now imagine this is the first batter of the game. That is what happened to Brett Gardner of the Yankees leading off against the Mets. Oh man, that relay from Neil Walker is a thing of beauty.
The Team USA men’s basketball team is still dunking all over everybody. The United States took on Nigeria in a warm-up for the Olympics and DeMar DeRozan threw down this gorgeous baseline dunk. And below, Kyle Lowry went half-court alley-oop to DeAndre Jordan.
Danny Duffy is the hottest pitcher in baseball. Danny Duffy was nearly unhittable against the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching a no-hitter into the 8th inning. He gave up just 1 hit in 8 innings, striking out 16, a Royals record. But that doesn’t do justice to just how dominant he was. The Rays swung-and-missed 35 times, tying Clayton Kershaw for the most in a single game in the last 15 years. Even more impressive is that those 35 whiffs came on 60 swings. That 58.3% swing-and-miss rate is the highest by any pitcher (min. 100 pitches) in the last 15 years. Wowza.
The John McEnroe First-Pitch Bonus. Typically, ceremonial first pitches only make the highlight reel if it is really awful. Rarely does one impress enough to do the same. John McEnroe is the latter. First of all, he throws this pitch prior to the Mets-Yankees game from the rubber. Throwing from a big-league rubber is tricky if you have never done it because it is higher than it looks on TV. McEnroe threw an absolute strike and he threw it with some heat. Sign him up!
