One Chart That Shows How Rare A Government Shutdown Really Is

Our friend Seth Kadish over at the Vizual Statistix tumblr just published this chart showing the history of government shut downs.

There are a couple interesting takeaways:

  • The government is, generally speaking, pretty good at remaining open.
  • October shutdowns were practically an annual tradition for a few years back in the late seventies.
  • The Gingrich shutdown is the only one to go on into the new year.
  • That shutdown also made Congress fear shut downs for almost two decades, until today.

Since we’re careening toward a shutdown right now, perhaps take a moment and consider how special this moment truly is.
