Last night at around 11:30, Barack Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed.
The government had received intelligence back in August that the 9/11 mastermind was in a compound in Pakistan.
On Friday, Obama approved a plan to attack the compound, and on Sunday Bin Laden was shot.
The raid was completely performed by Americans. No Americans were killed.
The fact that he was in such a huge place in Pakistan raises huge uncomfortable questions about what the Pakistani government knew, and when.
The NYT has an excellent description of the operation.
For a timeline of events leading up to the death, see here.

At around 10:00 PM, US news networks announced that Obama would give a speech at 10:30.
Later on, it was reported that it would be a national security speech.
And then at around 10:30, every news network announced that the news was that Osama Bin Laden was killed and captured.
We’re still waiting on the speech.
Details continue to dribble out in the meantime.
That he was killed in Pakistan will raise a fresh batch of questions about what Pakistan knew, and the relationship between the US and Pakistan’s intelligence authorities.
Update: The news conference has begun, and Obama immediately confirms that Bin Laden is dead.
A few months ago, we learned that Osama was in a compound in Pakistan. After months of intelligence work, Obama authorised an attack last week, and Osama was killed in a firefight today.
A small group killed Bin Laden in a firefight, and no Americans were killed. Pakistan cooperated.
Speech is over.
In news reports after Obama’s speech, more details emerged about the events that led to Bin Laden’s death. The firefight lasted 40 minutes according to NBC, and four people, including Bin Laden were killed. Reportedly, one of those killed was Bin Laden’s son.
He was killed in a mansion in a wealthy neighbourhood close to the Pakistani capital.
