While tweaking Congress for its vote last night to re-affirm America’s motto, “In God We Trust,” Obama responded, “I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work.”
This afternoon Jay Carney, expanded on the president’s theological musings, by repeating the truism, “Well, I believe the phrase from the Bible is, ‘God helps those who help themselves.'”
Fortunately for Obama, fully three quarters of Americans do believe that phrase is in the Bible, even though it’s not there. The sentiment dates back to ancient Greece and the phrase has been attributed to Ben Franklin.
But in the biblically literate Evangelical churches this weekend Obama and Carney are likely to be the target of many sermons. The “God helps those” phrase is the foil in many Christian preachers who believe that God helps the helpless.
“He who trusts in himself is a fool,” says the book of Proverbs.
So is the White House that dabbles in theology.
