An emergency warning has been issued for areas in George Town, northern Tasmania, as an uncontrolled bushfire continues to spread.

The warning was issued for Marguerite Street, Alfred Street and Mount George Road in George Town.

The Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS) said the fire is uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving. It has the potential to threaten homes and lives.

TFS urged residents in the affected areas to prepare to leave immediately and find safer ground. If a safe route is not possible TFS urged residents to shelter in their homes.
