Last month, an Animal Planet television special called “Mermaids: The Body Found” created some confusion as to whether the mythical sea creatures actually exist.According to the show’s website, the two-hour special “is science fiction based on some real events and scientific theory” and “paints a wildly convincing picture of the existence of mermaids, what they may look like, and why they’ve stayed hidden…until now.”
You can see how this might excite some gullible members of the public.
In order to set the record straight, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a statement reminding everybody that the legendary figures are not real, Discovery News’ Benjamin Radford reported.
No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples? That’s a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists.
Of course, it still makes a great bedtime story.
