As we speculated yesterday, it appears that the NFL players have gained significant leverage in labour talks with the owners.Judge Doty’s ruling earlier this week that eliminated a huge portion of the owners’ “lockout fund” has caused many owners to think twice about going forth with a lockout.
It is believed that another seven to 10 day extension for the current CBA is on the table today, and the players are believed to have already agreed to it. However, the owners are reluctant to accept it until after the CBA expires at midnight, because if they do so before Judge Doty would still be involved with court rulings. If the owners can convince the players to wait until after midnight, Doty would no longer have influence and the owners might get a more sympathetic court. Reports indicate that if the owners don’t agree to the extension today, the union will file decertification papers with Doty.
All reports indicate that there has been major progress over the last couple days.
