44% of casual NFL fans, and 35% of die-hard NFL fans would not attend a football game — even if they were offered free tickets — according to a new study.
The reason? They would rather sit at home and watch on TV, according to the study by Turnkey Intelligence for Sports Business Journal
TVs and home entertainment systems are continuously improving, allowing fans to watch more higher-quality games than ever before.
TV sports ratings are at an all-time high.
The NBA on TNT ended last year with its highest ratings in 26 years, the first game of the World Series was the highest rated in five years, and 107 million people tuned in to watch this year’s Super Bowl — the largest TV audience ever.
While there will always remain fans who enjoy the live in-stadium sporting event, the growing number of fans who want to skip the crowds and stay at home could be detrimental to teams like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees, who each recently completed billion dollar stadiums.
