One of the next waves in gaming — especially on portable devices — could be based on your real-world location. And Sony’s forthcoming portable gaming device, the follow-up to the PSP, will support it from the beginning.
When the device ships later this year, it will include Skyhook Wireless‘s location platform, Skyhook is announcing. This lets it sense location using a combination of wi-fi and cell-tower triangulation and GPS. (Will depend on each device’s configuration; whether it accesses cell towers or not.)
Beyond gaming, this will also be useful for other location-based apps on the device, ranging from maps to Facebook.
