NBCNews’ Alex Moe found out that Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista are not voting today, mostly because Newt Gingrich isn’t on the ballot in Virginia.Virginia is one of the 10 states holding its Republican nominating contest today for Super Tuesday. And even though Gingrich used to represent Georgia, he is now a registered Virginia voter.
When Virginia changed its ballot-access laws earlier this year, every campaign except the Romney and Paul campaigns failed to get enough valid signatures be on it.
Gingrich’s spokesman confirmed the decision to abstain to NBC:
“Newt and Callista are not casting a ballot in Virginia and they did not request an absentee one,” Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond told NBC News.
“In this Republican primary, when given a choice between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney, they could not pick either one,” Hammond said.
The Gingrich campaign had to submit 10,000 valid signatures by December. They failed. And so Gingrich is excluded from a delegate-rich state in a region where he is competitive. Voting for either of the remaining candidates would actually be more embarrassing than not voting at all, so that’s what the Gingrich’s decided to do.
