Despite encouraging signs from many of their minor league pitchers and free agent signings, the Yankees remain focused on acquiring another top-notch pitcher to fill the hole in their rotation behind CC Sabathia. We’ve already speculated that New York will look into adding Chris Carpenter towards the trade deadline, but the Yankees aren’t even willing to wait that long, and have kept a close eye on Twins ace Francisco Liriano.
The Twins aren’t eager to move Liriano, but they do have pitching depth, and given the Yankees desperation, a big-time offer might make Minnesota budge. The Twins aren’t likely to be interested in the Yankees’ top prospect, Jesus Montero, because they already have Joe Mauer at catcher.
Right now, the Twins reportedly have interest in Ivan Nova and Joba Chamberlain, the latter of which it sounds like the Yankees would happily part with.
The Yankees should be pleased that their pitching prospects appear to be ahead of schedule, and Mark Prior, Bartolo Colon, and Freddy Garcia have all looked decent in Spring Training, but New York remains unsatisfied with its patchwork staff.
Don’t expect a deal to go down any time soon, but the Yankees are clearly worried about their pitching situation and are itching to make a deal sooner than later.
