In Mumbai, India, there is a restaurant that serves “traditional” food from New York.
The restaurant, appropriately named New Yorker, manages to mix Italian, Mexican, and Indian cuisines — sometimes all in one dish.
The menu is bizarre, and it’s a good indication of what the Indian chefs think about American cuisine. For one thing, almost all of the items with New York in the title include nacho cheese.
Here are 10 odd “New York-food” items that appear on the menu.
In true American style, the drink menu is a fun mix of mojitos, margaritas, soda and ice cream. Diners can overload on chemicals and sweets before the meal even begins with items like the 'KitKat Thick Shake' and 'Lime Ice Soda with Ice Cream.'
There's a big range of appetizers, including onion rings, American cheese corn balls, paneer tikka, and beetroot humus with pita bread.
Their famous Manhattan French Fries are made with nacho cheese, salsa, sour cream, spring onions and tomato.
But they don't quite get it right with the pizzas. The restaurant seems to be trying out a funky mix of cultures. For instance, the Italian 'Veggie Fiesta Pizza' is made with American corn, pineapple, tomato, red yellow green bell peppers and Italian herbs.
An entire section of the menu is dedicated to fondue, another area in which the chefs mix and match culinary traditions. There's a nondescript 'Mexican Fondue' and a 'Mediterranean Fondue,' which includes sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, jalapeños, chilly flakes and green olives.
Even the decorations are all out Americana. On the walls, there's a mosaic replica of the Statue of Liberty and a poster of The Godfather. The caption: 'I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.'
