Michael Kudryk suffered a heart attack and died while swimming in the New York City Triathlon yesterday.The 64-year-old from Freehold, New Jersey was part of a three-person relay team.
Another competitor, a 40-year-old woman, also had a heart attack during the swimming leg but survived.
Halfway into the swim, Kudryk was spotted unconscious. He was recovered by an NYPD police boat and taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital centre, according to the New York Times.
The triathlon consists of a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10K run. The swim took place in the Hudson River, beginning at 96th Street and ending at the 79th Street boat basin.
It is the second death in the 11-year history of the event.
