A 44-year-old New Jersey woman didn’t know her father until pictures of him being ravaged by a cannibal surfaced on the news.Ronald Poppo, 65, had his face savaged last weekend by a 31-year-old man in Miami. Rudy Eugene reportedly ate Poppo’s entire forehead, mouth, and nose and gouged out one of his eyes.

But back in New Jersey, Poppo’s estranged daughter didn’t even know her father was alive, Larry McShane and Jennifer H. Cunningham reported for the New York Daily News.

The Daily News tracked down Janice Poppo DiBello, who hasn’t seen her father since her parents divorced when she was a toddler.

“Since I was 2 years old, him and my mum got divorced and there was no — like how normal divorces are, where you see your father,” Poppo DiBello told the Daily News. “Nobody ever heard anything from him, so I’ve never met him.

While she now knows her father is alive and in critical condition in a Florida hospital, Poppo DiBello said she wasn’t sure if she would head south to visit her father, saying she was still in shock.

Before Poppo disappeared in the 1970s, he had a promising future. He attended Stuyvesant High School, was a member of the Latin Club, and possibly played in a band.

He even aspired to the Oval Office, signing a friend’s 1964 yearbook “First Italian in the White House, 1984,” the Daily News reported.
