The New England Patriots enter the playoffs at 4/1 odds to win the Super Bowl — making them second-favourites behind the Packers. But here’s their dirty little secret: they haven’t beat a team with a winning record!
10 of the other 11 playoff teams have beat an elite team (sorry, Detroit). But the mighty Pats have got all 13 of their wins against mediocre opponents.
To be fair, a bunch of those wins came against teams right on the cusp of having winning records: the Jets, Eagles, Cowboys, and Raiders were all right there.
And they only played two winning teams: the Giants and the Steelers.
But they won’t get to face any 8-8 teams in the next few weeks. To meet expectations and get to the Super Bowl, they’ll have do something they haven’t done all year — beat an elite team.
Can they do it? Sure.
But should they really be at 4/1 odds when we really have no idea if they can go toe-to-toe with a top-tier team? Probably not.
