How will Rupert Murdoch judge whether or not the Daily,News Corp’s newspaper for iPads, is a success?
“When we’re selling millions,” he told a reporter at today’s launch event.
“Our ambitions are very big, but our costs are very low. So if you talk about success financially, it’s really a pretty low figure.”
“We have spent, in getting to this stage, with the development and everything, $30 million – all of which has been written off. It will be running at a cost of less than half a million dollars a week.”
Add $30 million to startup and $26 million per year, and The Daily cost $56 million to run in year one.
The paper will charge readers $.99 per week or $39.99 a year. Throw in advertising, and Rupe probably only needs a several hundred thousand people to sign up for the thing to put it in the black.
