'Captain Marvel' has made $1 billion at the global box office — here were the 5 movies from 2018 to hit that milestone

“Captain Marvel” joined an exclusive club on Wednesday. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster officially reached $US1 billion at the worldwide box office.

“Captain Marvel” is the first movie of 2019 to do so, but five movies released in 2018 hit that box-office milestone, helping to propel the worldwide box office to a record year. The global box office hit $US41 billion in December, largely thanks to North America, which had a record year at nearly $US12 billion.

2019 could beat that record though, as big movies like “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: Episode 9” have yet to hit theatres. The year was sluggish at first, but “Captain Marvel” helped the box office rebound for the second-biggest March of all time.
