NBC News has called it, Tea Party-backed insurgent Richard Mourdock has defeated six-term Republican Indiana Senator Richard Lugar in the Republican primary. With only about 20 per cent of districts reporting, Mourdock was maintaining about 61 per cent of the vote.

Lugar was the ranking Republican member on several prestige committees, including the Foreign Relations Committee.

He has been in the Senate since 1977.

Mourdock by comparison is a relative newcomer to politics. He was until today, the State Treasurer of Indiana. He nailed Lugar for being an elite globe-trotting Senator who was busy polishing his own gilded reputation rather than serving his constituents.
