How A Startup Got Wall Street Star Sallie Krawcheck On Board

Sallie Krawcheck

Sallie Krawcheck has made her first big move after leaving a top position at Bank of America.

She tells Business Insider that she has joined the board of a small online-brokerage startup, Motif Investing.

What we wanted to know: How did Motif CEO Hardeep Walia persuade her to sign up?

Krawcheck has had an amazing career and could do just about anything now—so her move is a major, major coup for Walia.

“Hardeep eats, sleeps, and breathes this idea,” Krawcheck told Business Insider.

“Let me illustrate that with an anecdote,” Krawcheck said. “We were scheduled for a breakfast meeting. I woke up at 2:30 a.m. with food poisoning. I emailed Walia at 3:30 apologizing, saying I couldn’t make it.”

Walia, who had just flow into New York, was awake. He responded to Krawcheck three minutes later.

“First impressions are critical,” Krawcheck said. They rescheduled for a dinner meeting, and while it took months for Walia to seal the deal, he did end up recruiting Krawcheck to the board.

So there you have it: The secret to success? Never sleep.
