MLB GMs Offer No Opposition To Expanded Playoffs

Bud Selig

Baseball GMs have provided almost no objections to expanding baseball’s playoff system, meaning that the idea will almost certainly become a reality. However, any changes to the postseason would likely not happen until 2012, because re-negotiating the Collective Bargaining Agreement before next season would be too difficult. The current CBA expires at the end of 2011.

Exactly how the playoffs would expand has not been made clear. There have been proposals for extra wild cards, single-game playoffs, a new best-of-three third round, and even a best-of-nine World Series. (We kind of like that one.)

However, shortening the regular season (and the number box office dates for teams to make money) may not happen, which means November baseball will become the norm.
