The last week of the regular season tested the loyalties of many baseball fans. Boston Red Sox fans were rooting for the New York Yankees. Yankees fans were rooting for the Tampa Bay Rays to beat the Yankees. And caught in the middle were the fans of the Baltimore Orioles.
You would forgive the Orioles and their fans if they just packed it in on Wednesday night. It was last game of a 93-loss season and they were forced to sit through a 90-minute rain delay with the Orioles losing.
But then the impossible happened. The Red Sox blew the game in the ninth inning and the players celebrated as if they had clinched their own playoff spot. And that was just after Orioles announcer Gary Thorne appeared to mock the Red Sox collapse when he said “can you hear the baseball gods laughing?“
But the real fun came several minutes after the game, when the Orioles fans learned that the Rays had completed their comeback and eliminated the Red Sox from playoff contention (the scoreboard at Camden Yards posted the score at 0:50 mark)…
