It’s been speculated about for months, but Major League Baseball has made its decision to add one wild card team to each league starting this season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The announcement will come Thursday, Rosenthal adds.
MLB had set a March 1 deadline to decide whether it would expand the playoffs in 2012 or 2013. With the announcement coming at the last minute, many thought the league would wait a year to make the switch.
The new wild card round will be a one-game elimination round. Baseball has yet to decide which of its network partners, ESPN, TBS, or FOX, will air the two new series.
Had this playoff format been in place last season, both the Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox’s historical collapses wouldn’t have mattered.
