Rush Limbaugh is set to be honored with a bronze statue at the Missouri Sate Capital.
The bust will be placed in the capital’s “Hall of Famous Missourians,” which also houses statues of Walter Cronkite, Sacajawea, Walt Disney, and Harry Truman.
Limbaugh most recently took heat after calling Georgetown University law student a “slut” and a “prostitute.”
However House Speaker Steven Tilley, who commissioned the piece to sculptor E. Spencer Schubert, said he is “honored” to have selected Limbaugh.
“It’s not the ‘Hall of Universally Loved Missourians,’ ” Tilley told the Kansas City Star. “It’s the Hall of Famous Missourians.”
The statue will cost $10,000 and funds will be raised privately through a golf tournament that the speaker will host.
Limbaugh’s family are prominent members of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. They settled in the territory in 1800 after moving from Germany. His grandfather, Rush Hudson Limbaugh, Sr., was the American ambassador to India. His uncle, Stephen Nathaniel Limbaugh, Sr., was a U.S. District Court Judge, and his cousin, Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., is currently a U.S. District Court judge appointed by George W. Bush.
Most of Schubert’s previous work isn’t political or controversial. However Schubert raised some eyebrows with his 2008 piece “Paintball Polling.” He shot campaign images of John McCain, Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden in the face with a paintball gun.
However state Democrats are fighting back.
“If you look at the folks that are honored with a sculpture in the Capitol, Mr. Limbaugh doesn’t seem to fit,” said state Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford to the Kansas City Star.
House Minority Leader Mike Talboy sent a letter to the Office of Administration’s Division of Facilities Management asking the agency to “refuse to allow the placement of the bust of Mr. Limbaugh in the Rotunda or any location in the Missouri Capital.”
And to top it off, the Washington Post reports that Limbaugh doesn’t even really like artists.
