IDEA OF THE DAY: File Taxes In 10 Minutes -- Just Snap A Mobile Picture Of A W-2, Hit Submit, And You're Done

The idea: Taxes are the worst. They’re time consuming and annoying. But Intuit has simplified the process with SnapTax.

SnapTax is a free mobile app that launched mid-January. It was downloaded 350,000 times in its first three weeks, Intuit’s Colleen Gatlin tells us.

Here’s how it works:

  • Download SnapTax on your iPhone or Android.
  • Snap a photo of your W-2 to import your info.
  • Provide your SSN, occupation, dependency status, etc.
  • Review your 1040EZ form and save it as a pdf before paying $19.99 to file your taxes electronically via your mobile phone. Voila, you’re done!

Whose idea: Intuit

Why it’s brilliant: Instead of struggling with complicated software or waiting for your accountant to do it, SnapTax will take care of your taxes in minutes.

The one downfall: this app only works for those with incredibly easy tax returns — think young twentysomethings who make less than $80K; they don’t have a mortgage, dependents, or businesses to their names.

If you don’t meet that description, you’re better off filing taxes a more time-consuming way.
