Despite their obvious holes, the Miami Heat were unable to add a veteran point guard or big man at last week’s trade deadline due to a lack of assets and cap space. But, thanks to today’s buyout of Mike Bibby by the Washington Wizards, Miami could turn into a big trade deadline winner anyway.
Bibby was traded by Atlanta last week for Kirk Hinrich, but the Wizards were evidently more interested in cap savings and acquiring Jordan Crawford than they were in Bibby’s services.
Today, the point guard agreed to sacrifice his entire $6.2 million salary for next season so that he could become a free agent now. Bibby will clear waivers on Wednesday, and although the Celtics, Lakers, and Trail Blazers have interest, Bibby has reportedly decided to play for Miami.
Miami also might be the beneficiary of Troy Murphy’s buyout by Golden State. After it initially appeared that Murphy was headed for Boston, he now seems like a good bet to end up with the Heat as well.
