Microsoft announced the launch date of its other version of Windows, the one that runs on servers. While not as sexy as Windows 8, the server version is arguably more important.

In its most recent fiscal year, Microsoft’s Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division—the business unit that licenses the desktop version to PC makers.

Windows Server 2012 is at the heart of Microsoft’s plans for the future.

Last month, Satya Nadella, president of Microsoft’s Server And Tools unit previewed the new server OS, dubbing it a cloud OS. It includes a bunch of new features to help companies build private clouds, where companies use cloud-computing technologies in their own data centres.
