Microsoft may have made three times as much money on HTC phones running Android than it did on its own Windows Phone handsets in the second quarter of this year.Asymco analyst Horace Dediu tweeted that Microsoft would have generated $21 million in revenue on the 1.4 million units it shipped in Q2. Microsoft gets an estimated $15 in software licensing per phone.

It would have gotten $60 million in revenue from HTC based on the $5 per unit it gets as a patent settlement. HTC shipped 12.1 million phones last quarter, and Dediu is estimating they were almost entirely Android phones.
