Skulls have been in fashion with artists ever since For the Love of God by Damien Hurst was created. We thought that with that creation, Mr. Hurst took the cake when it came to creating art with the macabre, but we have been proved wrong by artist Michael Benisty.
Mr. Benisty has created a one of a kind skull sculpture which is humongous in size – it stands eight feet tall (almost as much as the largest magazine in the world). The skull weighs 1100 lbs and is encrusted with more then 245,000 Golden Black Swarovski elements crystals. It took more than a year to bring this creation to life which has been christened as ‘Die to Live’. The project was done with the blessing of Nadja Swarovski who knew the artist and worked together with Benisty to bring the Die to Live project to completion.
The skull was created initially from a clay mould following which it was cast in stainless steel, subjected to a mirror polish and then encrusted with swarovski diamonds. The skull is currently on display at the OC Concept store at Madison Avenue and is available for viewing from Oct 28 to November 14.
