Now in its 12th year, Saloufest brings together 8,000 students from the UK and Ireland for a “sports tour”.There’s sports, yes. But more importantly, perhaps, there is drinking.

OK — A lot of drinking.

And despite some local reservations, the event may be a blessing for the town’s economy in the troubled country.

The event is held in the Costa Dorada's tourist resort of Salou.

During the day the students take part in sporting tournaments...

...or frolic on the beach.

However, it is at night that the carnage truly begins.

The 8,000 students descend upon the town.

But there is a plus — the students spend money.

Given the dire straits in the Spanish economy, that money is welcomed by local business owners, who are usually out-of-season this time of year.

Local authorities are hoping that this year a stronger official presence could hope to end some of the tour's previous excesses.

The revelers are due to leave on April 6th, so the town can remain calm on the Easter Weekend.

But it's only temporary — a second group of students will descend upon the town on April 9th.
