Meghan Markle’s royal wardrobe has had its fair share of surprising twists, but the duchess has made neutral colours one of her go-to staples in the past year.

For her visit to Birkenhead, UK, on Monday, Markle ditched her classic colour palette for one of her boldest and brightest looks yet.

The Duchess of Sussex wore a $US1,395 red wrap coat by Sentaler, which she paired with matching red pumps by Stuart Weitzman.

Those two pieces would have been eye-catching enough on their own, but Markle turned the look into a full-on statement by pairing them with a $US138 purple dress by Babaton by Aritzia.

Two bold colours in one outfit would normally clash, but Markle’s balance of bright red with a deeper purple made for a chic twist on the colour blocking trend. A brown Demi bag by Gabriela Hearst completed the look.

Her daring colour combination calls to mind a similar outfit worn by Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana during a trip to Hong Kong in November 1989. Diana paired a purple skirt with a red blazer and added an oversized hat featuring both colours to complete the look.

She also appeared to be channeling the queen, who often opts for bright colours to make her easily visible in a crowd.

During the visit, Markle reportedly let it slip that her due date is set for April, but it doesn’t look like she’ll be slowing her royal duties down anytime soon.

Kensington Palace recently announced that the duchess is taking on four new patronages, and she’s already been hard at work providing some hands-on help with her latest endeavours.
