Are Rory McIlroy And Caroline Wozniacki Destroying Each Other's Careers?

Caroline Wozniacki crashed out of another Grand Slam early this month — losing in the third round of the French Open.

At the same time, Rory McIlroy has completely fallen apart — missing three-straight cuts.

This got a couple of us around the office thinking: Are the two love birds mutually destroying each other’s careers?!?!

It sounds ridiculous, but Luke Donald floated the idea earlier this week, saying, “I remember when I was 23 and had an attractive girlfriend. I would take my eye off the ball sometimes, as well. You can’t blame him.”

But after looking at the stats, it turns out that the Wozzilroy Theory is false, at least when it comes to Rory’s game.

Let’s take a look.

The earliest known rumours of the two dating hit the web on July 18, 2011 (the green line). Check out Rory’s results before and after that point:

As you can see, he actually enjoyed the greatest stretch of his career months after he and Caroline started dating. He had eleven top-5 finishes and rose to No. 1 in the world.

Perhaps he has lost his focus very recently (as Donald suggested), but the idea that Wozzy led to his downfall is wrong.

BUT, things get more interesting when we look at Wozniacki’s results.

In the six months before she started dating Rory, she won five tournaments and only failed to reach the quarterfinals four times.

In the ~11 months since, she’s won only once and failed to reach the quarters seven times.

Or, more likely, Wozniacki is a young, inconsistent player who probably isn’t as good as we thought she’d be when she broke onto the scene two summers ago.

We’ll continue tracking this and let you know when new developments pop up.
