Matt Holliday went under the knife for an appendectomy much to the surprise of Cardinals fans. Holliday had a great start to this young season going 3-for-4 with a home run in yesterday’s Opening Day loss to the San Diego Padres. After the game, Holliday started experience discomfort in his stomach region. The surgery is being described as a non-emergency procedure, which indicates the appendix had not yet burst.

The Cardinals fans have had a tough go of it for the past few months. Right before Spring Training games even started, the imposed deadline to sign superstar first basemen Albert Pujols to a long term extension passed by without a deal getting done, thus all but guaranteeing that he will file for free agency at the conclusion of this season. Shortly thereafter, the Red Birds lost the exceptionally talented right hander Adam Wainwright to season-ending Tommy John surgery.
