After Bobby Kennedy Jr.’s estranged wife Mary Richardson Kennedy committed suicide on the family estate last month, the press blamed her husband’s womanizing for her ultimate downfall. But a heartbreaking Newsweek cover story suggests she was sick for a long time.Laurence Leamer documented Kennedy’s downward spiral, uncovering some information previously unknown to the public from Bobby’s divorce affidavit:
-Kennedy was probably going to permanently lose custody of her children. She had begun drinking again and repeatedly missed evaluation appointments with a psychologist.
-Two weeks before her death, she asked her housekeeper’s husband to buy her a rope. She said she needed it for a sofa she was building.
-In May 2011, Mary allegedly ran over and killed the family dog in the driveway. Then Bobby says she confronted him in front of her 11-year-old son Aidan:
“She screamed at Aidan as she hit me. ‘He is a demon. He is a demon. He is the most evil kind of man in the world. Everything he does is evil and a fraud. He is a philanderer, an adulterer, a sex addict.’ Aidan was crying. I backed down the back stairs blocking her blows—and dodged out the kitchen door. She pursued me, pummelling and pushing me with her fists all the way.”
-Bobby caught Mary allegedly stealing from his then 9-year-old daughter from his first marriage, Kick. After his young daughter made the claims, Bobby said he found her items under some of Mary’s clothes in her dresser.
-Bobby says that Mary’s behaviour changed often. He describes one of her “episodes” in the divorce affidavit:
“Her features would change with her jaw set forward, her face paled, her eyes notably darkened, her voice alternatively breathy or hard. Mary’s mood vacillated between rage and self-pity. Her behaviour often became violent and destructive.”
-The housekeeper gave this account of another allegedly violent incident in the home:
“Once, during dinner, Mary grabbed a plate of spaghetti and threw it all on Bobby in front of the children,” says the housekeeper. “Once they were having a fight while Bobby was taking a bath. We heard lots of noises upstairs. Mary came down the stairs and took the car and left. Five minutes later, Bobby came down. My sister asked, ‘Are you OK, Bobby?’ Bobby’s face was really white. And then my sister said, ‘What happened to you?’ And he said, ‘Mary attacked me in the bath with scissors.’?”
