European markets couldn't keep hold of their gains today

The FTSE 100 spent most of the day losing the gains it made at the market open.

The share index closed up just 0.18% to on Thursday to 6,072.47, after shooting up to 6,150 at the morning start.

Glencore shares gained more than 5% at the market open, but then quickly fell back to end the day down 0.68%.

European markets had a pretty shocking day overall. Germany’s Dax fell 1.79% while France’s CAC40 was down 0.76%. The Euro Stoxx 50, an index of the region’s biggest companies, was down 1.09% at the time of writing.

Shares in Volkswagen dived 1.53%.
