Deron Williams is the most coveted free agent of the summer, and will likely decide between staying with the Brooklyn Nets or leaving to team up with Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks.Williams, who intends to make his decision before July 4th, is meeting with Dallas executives today.
Signing Williams is priority number one for the Mavericks, So it might come as a bit of a surprise that billionaire owner Mark Cuban won’t be in attendance.
In fact, he’ll be on set in Los Angeles shooting a reality television show, ESPN’s Marc Stein reports.
Cuban stars in the ABC reality series “Shark Tank,” where he judges business propositions from aspiring entrepreneurs. Season four of the series began filming on June 30th.
Cuban has already been in contact with Williams over the phone since free agency opened, and the Mavericks’ Donnie Walsh, Rick Carlisle and Michael Finley will all be present at the meeting with Williams, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Still, Cuban’s absence is a bit surprising.
A key factor in getting Williams to come to Dallas is persuading the point guard to give up guaranteed money — Brooklyn can offer Williams around $100 million over five seasons, while Dallas can only offer around $75 million over four seasons.
Though Williams will have a better chance to win immediately in Dallas, most people would have to be talked into giving up $25 million dollars — which is where a successful businessman like Mark Cuban might make a difference at the negotiating table.
